So there we were, with many songs recorded but with no producer, so that was when Patricio got in touch with Jennifer F. who introduced us to Daniel Knowles, her husband, who happened to be a former member of APOF, producer and sound engineer. We had a test mix and our visions coincided, so Daniel was the perfect addition to the team, and we are very happy with how the álbum turned out.

How did Daniel and Maurizio’s work influence the final sound of Tropicos? Our impression is that there is a better “harmonization” between the instruments. What do you think?
R: Personally, I think Daniel and Maurizio helped us to pull everything together. Before recording, we studied the songs and tried to record as neatly as possible, but there are certain elements that have to be incorporated in the mixing.

Down Memory Lane [Album] 2017 by Seatemples
Did you feel any pressure, even from yourself, for being the second album? And how does it connect with Down Memory Lane, the previous album? My impression is of a more atmospheric, more dreamlike sound.
R: I think this album connects with Down Memory Lane through intimate landscapes, it is very important for us to be able to create atmospheres that allow you to bond with whoever is listening. Since we created some expectations with Down Memory Lane, we learned a lot about the creative process we decided to spend more time and everything needed on his album to make a perfect record. Firstable, the songs are way more elaborated, we could integrate more resources, we tried to improve our skills to tell cinematic stories creating a remarkable soundtrack for misfits.

Your music incorporates elements from Post-Punk, Shoegaze, Dreampop and Darkwave, resulting in a musical combination that generates both melancholy and nostalgia, sometimes a sensation of hypnosis. How did Seatemples’ music originate and what is the importance of lyrics in creating atmospheres?
R: I think it has to do mostly with a vision when you start writing a song based on a single melody and line, it’s like you had the skill to decide what to put before and after that magical scene, afterwards you pull the stages and enviroments because when you add these sounds which can vary and you realise about this due to a aesthetic criteria sometimes, so the you know what kind of lyrics you need to be develop in the right place and moment, this can also be done backwards, at the end I think its avery deep and special process, sometimes spiritual, sometimes experimental but you never disconnect your vision and sense of beauty and travelling along these scene one and again like going in loops.

Speaking of lyrics, what led you to compose songs in Spanish for the new album? When changing languages, do you also notice changes in the perception of the song’s atmosphere?
R: Well, as Spanish native speakers we grew up reading a lot of poetry, Vicente Huidobro and Gabriela Mistral are quite familiar for us as well as music in Spanish, then beautiful thing about those radio songs from the 80 and even older, so we were inspired by all of these musical stages and decided to start using some romantic and psychedelic contents in the lyrics. One of them is strictly related with the social uprising and lost of loved ones.

“Ecos” it’s my favorite song on the album at the moment, something that always tends to change with time and new auditions, something that happens with several albums. Is there a song on the album that touches you the most? And do you share that feeling of alternation in the taste of the songs on the albums over time?
R: We think musicians and artists in general always have a piece with which they connect the most. In our case we enjoy playing and listening to all our songs, especially Ecos and I think it’s because Ecos is directly related to our deepest roots in terms of the romantic music we grew up with.

Regarding the feeling of alternation, it definitely happens! It relates very much with the feelings and stages of life you are going through at the moment.

Talking about time, much is said about the busy times that we live and as twenty-four hours do not seem to be enough to account for everything we have to do. What’s your opinion? Can you manage your time satisfactorily?
R: Indeed times are very busy right now, but for better or for worse we are working from home so we have been able to manage time well despite all the million things we have to do daily, we have been sleeping a few hours less but in general this new normalcy has not taken a toll on us, yet.

Sometimes it’s hard to find balance between work and home, especially now that’s all mixed and I think that has been a problematic issue lately, we are living in this transition period where you have to do what you can, especially workers that deal with people, for the greater good with no right to complain. Hopefully this period will lead people to understand that time is precious and we have to be very aware of how we choose to spend it.

Still on time, if you could go back and do something different in relation to Seatemples or in general, would you change anything?
R: Probably, considering international touring before the pandemic!

Seatemples is present on the Spotify and Bandcamp platforms. Many criticize Spotify for the amount paid to artists, others praise Bandcamp for being more “friendly” to artists? What is your opinion?
R: We do think Spotify and all similar platforms of distribution are not as friendly to artists as Bandcamp, however, Spotify offers more distribution and it makes your music available for different types of audiences which, in the end, may lead people to look for you in other platforms where they can acquire your music.

Since we are talking about distribution formats, do you intend to launch Tropicos in physical media or will it be just virtual?
R: Yes, we actually released a digipack that was available for chilean territory, and that is already sold out, and we plan to release a second CD edition through our label, Icy Cold Records, that will hopefully be out in September, plus a cassette edition through Black Jack Illuminist. Hopefully in the future we will be able to release a vinyl version, but for now these are the plans.

Considering this singular moment that we are living, as has been the process of promoting the album, there are plans to present the songs live in the post-pandemic. Can you imagine what the post-pandemic shows will be like?
R: The promotion of the album has been mainly online, as everything right now, and I think that has played to our advantage since coronavirus has imposed that people have to spend more time in their computers so that has helped us reach different audiences and also get more feedback, which so far has been amazing! Regarding shows, right now the most important presentation is Independencia Sónica Festival, where will be sharing the virtual scenario with many shoegaze, dream pop and postpunk bands from Latinamerica.

Probably in the future shows will be mostly online, like Independencia Sónica, or very restricted in terms of space, like the ones that are being held right now with 3×3 squares where people have to stay within the limits or in their cars, none of these options is the ideal, we like the adrenaline of the stage!

Seatemples arrived here in Brazil initially due to participation in the tribute to Slowdive, by The Blog That Celebrates Itself? How did the participation happen and what motivated the choice of the song “Spanish Air”?
R: We had had some singles in rotation before but we hadn’t released our album yet so it was a very nice plus being invited (by Renato Malizia) to participate in this project, especially because we are big fans of Slowdive. Since we were the last band to get in, we worked our way through finding a song that we were comfortable with, so we landed in Spanish Air. Now the we see it in retrospective, it was a great choice and it brings back a lot of memories.

Spanish Air [Slowdive] 2017 by Seatemples

On September 25th you will participate in the Independencia Sónica Online Festival, which will have Shoegaze / Dreampop / Post-Punk bands, including new ones like the Brazilian Ousel or the Argentine Nax, and experienced ones like Resplandor, one of the most long-lived South American bands and representative of the continent’s Shoegaze and Dreampop. Do you follow the continent’s music scene? Which bands, besides those mentioned, could you indicate, including from your country?
R: We do! We are big fans of latinamerican bands from the 80s and 90s such as Jirafa Ardiendo, early Lucybell, Malcorazón, Sien, Pinochet Boys, Congelador, Sumo, Caifanes, early La Ley, Size, and some current ones like Santo Suicida, The Know, Maff, Diavol Strâin, Kilometro 22, Lasitud, Rilev, Pilgrims of Yearning, Jesucrisis, Lluvia Trip, Pure Morning, Hexagrams and Car Crash Sisters.

Finally, can we hope to see you here in Brazil in the future?
R: Hopefully, once coronavirus is over!
